Stepping into the role of Deputy of Care at Carramar Secondary, Craig Thomas brings with him a deep passion for student wellbeing and a strong belief that every student deserves a place to shine. With years of teaching experience, particularly in Outdoor Education, Craig is excited to now channel his focus into creating an environment where care is at the heart of every interaction. For him, being a visible and consistent presence is key, someone students can trust and turn to when they need support.

Craig’s leadership philosophy centres on authentic connection. He believes trust is built through consistency, empathy, and genuine listening. “Young people are incredibly perceptive—they know when you’re being genuine,” he says. By being present at school events and following through on his commitments, Craig works to create safe spaces where students can be themselves and feel supported through the ups and downs of school life.

As a leader, Craig emphasises the importance of supporting the whole person, not just the student. He recognises that school is as much about friendships, identity, and resilience as it is about academics. Through strong pastoral care and wellbeing programs, Craig believes schools can provide safe opportunities for students to grow, test boundaries, and learn more about themselves, while knowing they are valued and cared for.

His approach has been shaped by his own mentors growing up, teachers who showed him the power of encouragement, kindness, and discovering what sparks joy in a student’s eyes. These lessons have stayed with him, guiding his career and shaping how he supports young people today. Reflecting on his time in Outdoor Education, Craig recalls countless moments where students moved from fear to exhilaration when conquering a challenge they didn’t think possible. For him, those moments are what teaching is all about: helping students bridge the gap between “what is” and “what could be.”

Outside of school, Craig’s life is just as full and vibrant. When he’s not cheering on his children at their weekend sports, he’s contributing to the Fremantle Dockers AFLW program, an involvement that continues to inspire him. Restless if he sits still for too long, Craig thrives on balancing his professional and personal commitments, always looking for ways to contribute, connect, and support those around him.
