The Duncraig Theatre came alive on 7 May with the first Senior Music Concert of the year, a celebration of emerging talent and musical growth. With over 110 students from Years 7 to 12, including several talented Year 6s, the evening marked the debut of newly formed ensembles, many performing together for the very first time. Director of Music Andrea Stimson explained that the aim wasn’t about staging a grand vision, but rather cultivating confidence, connection and teamwork within each group.

The concert showcased the full breadth of St Stephen’s School’s Senior Ensembles, from the bold energy of  the Funk Band to the refined elegance of the Classical Guitar Ensemble. Each performance reflected careful repertoire choices that challenged students while allowing their musical personalities to shine. Ms Stimson noted that ensemble directors curate music to push boundaries and inspire growth, with some Year 12s even contributing their own selections—adding a personal and collaborative touch.

Audience members were treated to a vibrant tapestry of sound, with each piece offering something unique. The sheer variety, from orchestral swells to rich choral harmonies, kept listeners engaged and eagerly awaiting what came next. While everyone had their favourites, it was clear that the heart of the performance lay in the students’ collective effort and enthusiasm.

With another concert scheduled later in the year, an emotional one that will also bid farewell to the graduating class of musicians, this first performance served as a warm and inspiring prelude. If the spirit and talent on display are anything to go by, the finale promises to be something truly special.
