Matthew brings the BUZ
In our Carramar Primary community we are fortunate to have Matthew Sloan teaching Year 6 as well as running our BUZ program!
Matthew brings a wealth of experience from other industries to his role at St Stephen’s School.
“My first job was as a Computer Operator working with mainframe computers,” said Matthew.
“I then studied at UWA and completed a Bachelor of Science and then a Bachelor of Social Work. I was employed as a Social Worker for 14 years, working at the Children’s Hospital and then at Rocky Bay with people with disabilities and their families. I changed careers aged 40 when our two boys were in primary school.
Matthew did his Graduate Diploma of Education at ECU when it was in Churchlands, and after three years in Busselton at Georgiana Molloy Anglican School, Matthew joined St Stephen’s School in 2006.
Today, Matthew teaches Year 6 students four days a week, with the other day spent visiting other year groups and teaching social and emotional skills in the ‘BUZ’ program.
“I enjoy watching students grow in their understanding of what we are teaching, learning about getting along with others and learning about themselves,” said Matthew.
“’BUZ’ stands for ‘Build Up Zone’ and focuses on identifying feelings, expressing our feelings appropriately, communicating effectively with others, resolving conflict and working as a team. It’s a lot of fun.”
Matthew is married to Karen, and together they have two adult sons, one living and working in Sydney and the other in London.
“I enjoy playing golf, cooking and spending time with family and friends,” said Matthew.
“My wife and I love walking and have recently walked 500 km along the Camino de Santiago in Spain.”
