St Stephen’s School Duncraig campus has been awarded a Mathematical Association of WA silver certification in recognition of actively extending students and staff in the classroom and beyond. The Potato Olympics, Maths Show and a mix of staff professional development opportunities were just some of the highlights in the Mathematics Learning Area in 2020 which were showcased to MAWA.

Maths teacher Adam Merrifield was instrumental to the Maths Active School Program project, liaising with colleagues to develop a portfolio for MAWA which outlined the work done in the Mathematics Learning Area to enhance student and teacher learning.

“The Mathematics Department at St Stephen’s School is always looking to encourage, support and enhance students thinking, understanding and enjoyment in mathematics,” Mr Merrifield says.

“As teachers, we are always looking at ways to deepen our own understanding of mathematics and explore new and innovative ways to help students achieve their goals,” he says.

“The Maths Active School Program enables schools to demonstrate that they actively extend students and teachers beyond the normal mathematics classroom.”

Mr Merrifield is one of five Exemplary teachers at the School who have undertaken a project to help enhance the learning and life of the School in some way.

“Understanding mathematics helps build problem solving skills and how to reason and logically think through a problem. It is these vital skills that students will be able to apply to any career they choose to pursue.”

“It’s our role as Mathematics teachers to allow students to build upon existing knowledge in such a way that they see links within and across topics and how it applies to the real world.”
