Journey to Neverland
Our upper primary students are all a-buzz with auditions and preparations for Peter Pan Jr. – this year’s primary musical! Our cross-campus primary Drama teacher, Mrs Shannon Brosnan, is equally excited about sharing this much-loved story with our community!
“Peter Pan Jr. is a timeless tale that celebrates the magic and wonder of being young – a time in our lives that I think young people today often feel the need to rush through,” said Shannon.
“I love the idea of giving the students an opportunity to explore a story that embraces the innocence of childhood, imagination and adventure.”
All students in Years 4, 5 and 6 at Carramar and all students in Year 5 and 6 at Duncraig are involved in the production, and it is sure to be a life-long memory for all.
“There are so many benefits to being involved in a production of this scale,” said Shannon.
“Participation helps build confidence, allowing students to develop self-expression and experience the thrill of performing in front of a live audience. It also encourages important life skills such as teamwork and collaboration, as well as discipline and responsibility. Every single student plays an important role in bringing the production to life. Beyond the performance side, this experience will create lasting memories for students, as well as a strong sense of school spirit.”
One of the most rewarding parts of a school musical for our staff is seeing the incredible growth in students. After 18 years of teaching Drama, Shannon has had the joy of watching hundreds of students blossom with the experience of performing in a large-scale show like this one.
“I’ve seen students develop a true love for performing, discovering talents they never knew they had,” said Shannon.
“I’ve watched more reserved students come out of their shell and absolutely shine on stage, gaining confidence with every rehearsal. I also love the way a production brings students together, building wonderful friendships across classes and year levels.”
When parents come to watch our performance of Peter Pan Jr. they will be treated to a magical and heartwarming experience filled with adventure, imagination, and energy. Our community can expect lively musical numbers, engaging storytelling and plenty of fun moments that will have them smiling, laughing, and maybe even shedding a tear.
“I hope that through this production we are able to showcase a real celebration of the students’ growth, collaboration, and love for the arts,” said Shannon.
Involvement in a production like Peter Pan Jr. is a huge undertaking for everyone involved, and parents can definitely help our students to balance school, performance and family life!
“One of the best ways parents can support our young performers is through encouragement, whether this be by encouraging their child to embrace their involvement with positivity, or by helping their child practise their lines, songs or choreography at home,” said Shannon.
“When practising, little and often is the most effective way to help the students feel confident with their dialogue and movement. It is also important to celebrate their achievements no matter how big or small – for one child it might be their first opportunity to perform as a lead character, which is incredible, but for another child it may be a huge step for them just to have a go at auditioning, or to be on stage performing in front of an audience.”
