Building Futures, Not Just Report Cards
The annual St Stephen’s School Careers Expo is more than just a showcase of universities and workplaces, it’s a reminder that schooling isn’t just about grades, it’s about preparing students for life beyond the classroom. Held this year at the Carramar Gym, the event welcomed students from both campuses to explore a wide range of post-school opportunities and pathways. From the Australian Defence Force and Engineers Australia to UWA, Curtin University, graphic design studios and local mechanic institutes, the breadth of industries represented helped bridge the gap between school and the real world.
At St Stephen’s School, we understand that we are just one part of a student’s journey. Our role is not to push them down a singular path, but to equip them with the tools and guidance to make informed decisions about their future. Bringing the outside world into our school community through events like the Careers Expo creates space for meaningful conversations and connection. It demystifies the post-school transition and helps students visualise the many ways their passions can be transformed into a fulfilling career.
One of the most powerful aspects of the Expo is its timing. “We aim the event at Year 10 students as they are on the verge of their pathway selections for their final two years of high school,” Careers Advisor Rob Crewe explains. “We feel it can give them important focus and help to establish a meaningful goal on this journey.” Year 11 and 12 students, along with families from the wider school community, are also encouraged to attend—creating a rich environment for intergenerational conversations and practical advice.
“Early exposure broadens their understanding of the opportunities available and allows them to discover interests and strengths they might not have considered,” says Mr Crewe. “It also helps reduce anxiety about the future by giving them a sense of direction and purpose.”
And it wasn’t just about the booths and brochures. Our talented Hospitality students took the opportunity to apply their skills in a real-world setting, crafting and serving delicious food and drinks for guests. Their efforts received glowing reviews throughout the afternoon, and the experience served as a wonderful reminder of how learning can come to life beyond the textbook.
Special thanks must go to our Careers team; Sarah Cooke and Rob Crewe, as well as our Head of Learning Area – VET, Nicki Hipgrave, for organising such a dynamic and valuable event. Their dedication to supporting our students as they transition from school into their next chapter is evident in every carefully considered element of the Expo.
