Ben Popham (Duncraig 2018) has been nominated for the Western Australian of the Year Awards for his achievements in sport.

The swimming sensation also has his sights set on this year’s Paralympics in Tokyo. Next month will be a busy one for Ben, with award winners officially announced in early June and Swimming Australia trials on in Adelaide later in the month.

Ben is an S8 para swimmer. He has made impressive waves in international swimming competitions, winning two golds at the Para Pan Pacs in 2018 and claiming one silver (S8 100m Freestyle) and two bronze medals (S8 50m Freestyle and 34-point 4x100m Freestyle Relay) at the 2019 World Para Swimming (WPS) World Championships in London.

2020 competitions were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic but Ben managed to continue training, working around lockdown and restriction disruptions to maintain his fitness and skills.

Ben learnt to swim as a young boy and was enthusiastic to try squad swimming at 7 years of age. His skills in the pool quickly developed and Ben started competing at age 11. Now, nine years on he is eagerly chasing his Paralympic dream, with hopes to get to Japan for the games in August.
