Admin with a Dash of Magic
If you’ve ever walked into the Duncraig Primary Admin office and been greeted with a warm smile, chances are it was from Mrs Claire Dunne Flaherty. In just over a year and a half, Claire has become an integral part of the St Stephen’s School family, bringing her signature blend of warmth, humour and calm efficiency to the heart of the school. “It feels like I’ve known everybody forever,” she says, and it certainly feels that way to everyone who knows her.
As Primary Administration Support Officer, Claire’s days are anything but predictable. “Literally, what does it not involve?” she laughs. From daily attendance management and tending to the never-ending flow through the Get Well Room, to phoning home about lunchboxes, musical instruments or spare uniforms, Claire is the behind-the-scenes powerhouse keeping things running.
When asked what song would best suit her workday, Claire’s playlist spans from Mary Poppins on the good days to Nanny McPhee on the tougher ones — although she cheekily suggests Jump Around by House of Pain might also capture the pace! Her secret to staying on top of it all? “One nice coffee early in the morning, go with the flow… and laugh a little with your colleagues.” Add in the warm, welcoming community and the occasional surprise thank-you note on her desk, and you have the perfect recipe for Primary Admin success.
One of Claire’s favourite peaceful spots on campus is the stained-glass window in the main school administration area — a quiet space to pause and reflect.
Outside of school, Claire recharges with daily evening walks (music and classic wired headphones are a must), and quality time baking and cooking with her four children. These small moments, she says, are what “fill her cup” and set her up for the next day.
If she ever had the chance to swap roles for a day, Claire would be curious to step into the shoes of the school psychologist — a role she says is vital in today’s world and deeply admires for the care it provides students. It’s no surprise: behind her quick wit and calm nature is a deep commitment to student wellbeing, making her a quiet but mighty force in the life of the school.
