We are delighted to announce that the renovated Duncraig Science building is now filled with enquiring minds studying a range of Science disciplines from Physics to Chemistry, Psychology, Biology, Human Biology, Marine and Maritime Studies as well as Certificate III in Laboratory Skills.

The sustainable design, retained and refurbished the historical infrastructure of the original labs, while extending out and upwards to create nearly 2000m² of contemporary learning space which will inspire creativity, collaboration and innovation for St Stephen’s School students for many years to come.

Head of Science, Mr Andrew Bacon is delighted with the new space.

The new Science building is an amazing facility. There are now eight dedicated labs that each have a theme for the various Science disciplines,” said Andrew.  “Additionally, there is a huge forum space with a fantastic screen and sound system for presentations. The labs encompass an amazing courtyard space that can be utilised with planting beds and for outdoor activities.”

Deputy Head of Secondary (Teaching and Learning), Dr Liz Criddle shares Mr Bacon’s enthusiasm.

“The Science building provides our teachers and students with the latest in contemporary facilities and equipment, across many Science disciplines,” said Liz. “I have observed a wonderful energy and vitality in the staff as they have commenced teaching in the Science building. The students are excited and engaging fully with their learning and the teachers are thriving as they explore the possibilities of the new spaces.”

It’s clear that our Science staff are also inspired by working in the new laboratories.

Mr Ben Nicholson (pictured right) has been teaching Science for ten years now, and is also an alumnus (Duncraig, Class of 2005).

“Teaching Science classes in the new building has been fantastic,” said Ben.

“The fully equipped labs make setting up, running and packing down experiments easy and efficient, meaning the students are able to do more hands-on activities to consolidate their learning. The video, audio and Wi-Fi in each room work flawlessly, allowing us to implement technology into the lessons without it becoming a distraction. For practical subjects like Marine and Maritime Studies, the future is very bright as the space, resources and equipment we now have access to will allow the students to experience the syllabus topics in a much more engaging, impactful and memorable way.”

“The invigorating aspect of the new building from a personal point of view, is the opportunity to do longer term practical projects and experiments, and having the facilities and resources to teach the students specific skills that will help them in the future if they decide to pursue a career in Science,” said Ben.

Mrs Sandra Keetch, pictured right doing a pre-experiment safety demonstration, shares Ben’s enthusiasm, with 17 years’ Science teaching behind her.

“The most positive aspects of the new Science building for me are the flexibility of design together with the large foyer area which will provide a number of great opportunities like team teaching,” said Sandra. “The new building has inspired me to consider different ways of setting up the classroom to further stimulate learning.”

Students from Years 7 to 12 are already experiencing the benefits of the new Science building.  Lara Brand is in Year 8 and loves the aesthetics of the new space.

“My favourite feature of the new Science Centre is the interior of the building as it is unique compared to the other buildings on the campus. I also love the forum area as it is extremely spacious.” said Lara.

Ella Froster, who is also in Year 8 didn’t have an experience of the old Science labs, but appreciates the new buildings all the same!

My favourite feature of the new Science building is the new classrooms. I absolutely adore the cleaner and more modern take along with the addition of each room being suited for a different Science,” said Ella. “I also really like the big foyer that eliminates the need for us to wait outside.”

For upper secondary students, the new space has particular significance in their last few years of school.

Joshwa Ruiz is in Year 11 and told us how much he is enjoying studying in the new facility.

For me, the new building is an incredible addition to the campus, especially considering that I get to undertake ATAR Chemistry within an actual science lab. The facilities are modern and a breath of fresh air and it elevates the atmosphere of the school, and overall makes all sciences so much more engaging,” said Joshwa.

“The most valuable aspect of the new Science building is the ability for students to have access to more in-depth and most importantly fun practicals. The opportunity to do dissections, chemical reactions, and other experiments has truly elevated both understanding and interest within classes.”

Fellow Year 11, Alyssa Hardingham, is interested in a career in research or healthcare, so the foundations she is learning in Science at St Stephen’s School are essential for her future.

I’m taking both ATAR Chemistry and ATAR Human Biology, and both subjects can be very content heavy. So far, I’ve had the chance to conduct multiple chemistry experiments with Bunsen burners and various chemicals, and in Human Biology we’ve engaged in dissections of muscles and bones,” said Alyssa.

“These practical activities are valuable to our understanding of the topics we’re learning, and they’re always a bit more engaging than a standard lesson. The new labs and classrooms are very modern and equipped with so many new resources available to us. I think it makes studying Science much more engaging and effective.”

Our Principal, Mrs Donella Beare is looking forward to the official opening next month where the efforts of everyone involved in the project can be recognised.

“The Duncraig Science building is the culmination of a number of years of planning and delivery involving our own staff as well as design and construction partners. We now have a learning space that truly meets the pedagogical needs of our school and strengthens our reputation for offering high-quality, innovative education.”
