Kayla Kargas
A simple blank page has so many possibilities, according to Carramar Class of 2013’s Kayla Kargas.
Whether there’s a story to share or an image to be sketched, Kayla’s creativity and prowess with words and a pencil combine to see her working in the Marketing and Communications industry as well as honing her love of illustrating in her spare time.
Kayla is looking forward to showcasing one of her favourite illustrations in the St Stephen’s School Alumni Exhibition in January, alongside a range of other diverse artistic pieces from our Alumni community.
After graduating from Carramar Campus in 2013, Kayla headed straight to UWA to study Communications and Media. Since then, she has completed her BA (Communications and Media/English and Cultural Studies) and a Masters in Strategic Communications.
Though studying has been just one part of Kayla’s story since graduation.
“Since I left School, other than graduating and working in my field, I also did some travelling around Europe and Asia, and bought a house,” Kayla says.
An internship at the Department of Biodiveristy, Conservation and Attractions turned into an employment opportunity for Kayla, and she gained unique experience working for the department during the peak COVID outbreak in Perth.
Now, she is working with the Department of Health’s Communications and Marketing team – and enjoying building her skills in an industry she is passionate about.
“I love the diversity of the field, the different topics, and the ability to work for any company anywhere in the world,” she says.
“It’s a fun field to be in. I’ve met a lot of like-minded people along the way too.”
Kayla knew she wanted to be part of the world of communications while she was still at school. It’s an industry which includes many of her favourite things such as film, television, books, pop culture, and media.
“Towards the end of Year 12 I had a strong understanding of my interests thanks to some amazing teachers who guided and pushed me in the right direction. Because of this, I had a sense of direction once graduating – I knew my strengths and weaknesses and went with it. By following them, I ended up studying Communications, Media and English and things fell into place from there.”
Kayla encourages current students to follow their interests to find their path.
“Don’t be too hard on yourself or feel like you need to figure everything out as soon as you graduate. Follow your interests and things that bring you joy; you never know where it may lead.”
“If studying isn’t your thing, don’t feel pressured to continue a form of study – instead lean into your strengths and go from there.”
