Demee Martin

Nearly a decade since graduation, Carramar Class of 2013’s Demee Martin is back on campus working as an occupational therapist with our students who are part of the Telethon Speech and Hearing outpost program.

Her passion for working with children and young people is easy to see. She is enthusiastic about connecting with students and assisting them to achieve their goals each and every day. Her work with young people was also officially recognised in 2020 when she was nominated for a WA Disability Support Award.

Demee works at our Carramar campus as well as across a number of other schools, supporting children with hearing impairment or loss to actively participate in mainstream schooling.

“I have always loved working with children, it’s just so much fun and I love children’s honesty, imagination, and passion for life,” Demee says.

“It’s so great to see them succeed, grow and improve (especially those children that are experiencing difficulties/challenges at school due to their disability). I believe there are so many benefits to early intervention and access to therapy and that’s why I’m so passionate about it,” she adds.

Since finishing school, Demee has worked with children and young people in mentoring and support roles to improve mental health, physical health and teach life skills in Perth and in WA’s north.

“I’ve also supported adolescents with autism and other disabilities to access their community, transition out of school and to access the workforce to improve their independence,” Demee explains.

She says her time as a student at St Stephen’s School taught her the value of resilience, community and the importance of service to others, and she encourages current students to take on the opportunities offered to them at high school.

“Volunteer for organisations or in industries you are passionate about and get as much life experience as you can – this really helped me to work out where I wanted to work! Do what you love!”
