Carramar - Secondary School

National Future Problem-Solving Finalist

Phoebe Moses of Year 8 at the Carramar campus, placed first in the National Finals of the Future Problem Solving program for her futuristic story based on society's ethical responsibility regarding genetic testing in the future.

The Future Problem Solving program aims to 'develop the ability of young people globally, to design and promote positive futures using critical, creative thinking'. The International Conference that Phoebe will be attending in June, involves students from other countries including Canada, Great Britain, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, Singapore and the USA.

Phoebe was selected to represent Australia and will also be involved in writing as part of a team of like-minded students from a range of countries. In preparation for the project, Phoebe will research the topic of Ethical use of Pharmaceuticals in the future, and consider consequences that may result from mankinds overuse of medicine in the future and come up with some viable and humane solutions.

Elizabeth Drieberg, teacher of the Gifted and Talented Program at the Carramar campus said, "Other aspects of the International Conference at Indiana University will include visual displays and presentations by other international students presenting future solutions to community problems, concerts with students' music, dance, theatre specific to their country and sight seeing tours of the culture and history of the area."

Phoebe will enter her national championship story on society's ethical responsibility regarding genetic testing in the future and will be evaluated against the stories of other international representatives.

Murdoch University Scholars

St Stephen’s School congratulates Hannah Bailey and Adrienne Lang (Class of 2011 from Carramar campus) as scholarship recipients for Murdoch University.

Hannah Bailey has been announced as the recipient of the 2011 Murdoch University Most Outstanding Mock Trial Student Scholarship. The announcement was made at the WA Supreme Court following the Grand Finale of the Mock Trials competition last year. Hannah was presented with her Scholarship by the Dean of Law (Professor Phil Evans), with both the Murdoch Moot Court Bench Faculty Advisor (Lorraine Finlay) and Moot Court Bench Chief Justice (Malcolm Jezewski) also being present to congratulate Hannah on her achievement. Notably, Hannah is the first private school recipient of this scholarship.

Adrienne Lang was awarded the Murdoch University Deans Entry Award, which guarantees admission to her selected course of study at Murdoch University. The Dean’s entry awards are awarded based upon academic achievement or individual merit.

This year is the fourth year that Murdoch Scholarships have been awarded. High schools are invited to nominate candidates for Murdoch Scholarships from amongst students participating in the Mock Trials competition. Candidates must then compete in a Persuasive Argument competition where they are assessed by a panel of judges on their analytical, research and advocacy skills. As recipients of a scholarship Hannah and Adrienne are guaranteed a place at the Murdoch University School of Law in 2012, and will also join one of the mooting teams that will represent Murdoch University in international mooting competitions next year.

WACE Results Carramar campus 2011

The St Stephen's School community is very encouraged by the continuing achievements of our students. Our congratuations go to all our students who have achieved so well, including their families and teachers who have encouraged and nurtured them through many years of schooling. The significant achievement of so many students bears witness to the nature of the St Stephen's School community in which we seek to "Serve God and serve one another", as very rarely does one achieve in isolation from the support and care of peers, parents and teachers.

Excellence is something that we encourage all our students to strive for, not merely that they might enjoy the accolades of others but that they might in turn be excellent for and towards others. May God bless our graduating class of 2011 as they contribute to the wider Australian community through further education or employment in 2012.
